Literacy is a key skill and a key measure of a population’s education. In this entry we discuss historical trends, as well as recent developments in literacy. From a historical perspective, literacy levels for the world population have risen drastically in the last couple of centuries. We have gathered stats, numbers and info from various sources to chart the world’s literacy level for the past 500 years. Only a few countries were recorded few centuries ago, but the numbers will increase as we reach the 20th century. There are 2 segments of this chart, one sorted through the top 25 highest and the next sorted through the lowest 25.
